Canine Vaccination Descriptions


DHPP- Distemper, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza, Parvo, *Highly contagious and easily passed between dogs.

BORDETELLA- A yearly vaccination that helps prevent "Kennel Cough."
*Required for dogs that go to a boarding facility or groomers.
*Recommended for dogs that go to dog parks or have a lot of interaction with other dogs.

RABIES- First vaccination is given 4 months of age, effective for 1 year.
Booster is given every 3 years thereafter.
*Virus that attacks the brain and central nervous system.
*Transmitted to humans through bite of an infected animal.

*Required to obtain license.

LYME Vaccine-  Given to help prevent Lyme Disease which is transmitted by ticks.  Vaccine given once a year.

LEPTO Vaccine- Given to prevent Leptospirosis, a disease transmitted through wildlife urine.  Ask your vet about your dogs risk factors and the need for this vaccine.

RATTLESNAKE Vaccine- Given to lower the risk of fatality if bitten by a rattelsnake. Vaccine must be boostered once after inital dose then yearly in the Spring.

 

Additonal Reccomendations

HWT- Heartworm Test, recommended yearly to test for fatal heartworms, a disease spread through masquitos.

HEARTWORM PREVENATIVE- given monthly all year, recheck heartworm test is required earlier than one year if there is a lapse in medication.

FECAL- sample of feces is brought in to test for intestinal parasietes which can be transmitted to humans.  Testing for intestinal parasites should be done at least once a year to protect your family from being infected.

EARLY DETECTION-  A routine blood test should be performed yearly on all pets to ensure they are healthy.  By routinely checking bloodwork, our doctors are able to diagnose problems early to prevent further disease.  Some disorders, if caught early, can be treated with a simple diet change.
